Hot take: AI coding tools are making junior devs worse

Unpopular opinion but I think AI coding tools like Copilot, Cursor, and Claude Code are creating a generation of developers who can ship code but don't understand what they're shipping. I've been reviewing PRs from junior devs and the code looks fine on the surface but when I ask them to explain their approach they can't. They just... let the AI write it and moved on. Are we trading short-term productivity for long-term understanding? Genuinely asking, not just being a grumpy senior dev.
