How I got a $2,000 discount on a New Model Y (The "Inventory Match" Trick)
By EpicPulse839 · TIP · About Tesla Model Y
Some or many of you might already know this, but I wanted to share for those who don’t. This could literally save you a couple thousand dollars if you’re looking to take delivery before the March 31st quarter-end.
I was already planning to get a new Model Y before the deadline. I saw a YouTube video mentioning that sales advisors sometimes offer free upgrades to move existing inventory. After posting here yesterday and getting some great advice, I tried it myself. Here is the strategy
\- Scope the Inventory: Check the Tesla website for "New Inventory" near you. Identify a configuration you actually want that is currently in stock.
\- Find the "Missing" Spec: Find a different configuration (different colothis community) that is NOT available at your local center.
\- Go in Person: Walk into the showroom and tell them you’re ready to pull the trigger today.
\- Tell them you specifically want the design that is not in stock. They’ll check and likely tell you it’s a 2–3 week wait.
\- Mention you’d be willing to take a vehicle from their current local inventory instead, but ask if they can provide an incentive on the color or wheel upgrade since it’s not your "first choice."
\- If they want to close the deal (sure they do), they will often have you order the unavailable car and then immediately manually match you to the inventory VIN.
In my case, I wanted Quicksilver with a White Interior. I saw that Red with White was unavailable. By following these steps, they applied a $2,000 "Sales Incentive" adjustment (sometimes called a "deviation price adjustment") to match the price.
Why this works right now:
Tesla is famous for their end-of-quarter delivery pushes. They would much rather discount a car $1,000–$2,000 to get it off the lot by March 31st than have you wait until April to take delivery.
If you’re on the fence, now is the time to go talk to a human at the showroom. Good luck!

ThunderGamer219: Great advice I basically did this by accident and it really works
EagerOwl7486: Finally a useful post rather than another “should I wait until 2030 to get HW6”. Thanks the author
EpicScout226: This is a good guide.
HappySpark80: I already ordered a Tesla with delivery around 4th April. Can I go to a center and change this to something in stock? Will this work?
AlexChen: I hate this. I just bought one in Friday and I changed my color to get one earlier and I didn't ask for the discount. Man that sucks. Love the car though
EagerOwl7486: My small city has a tesla service center but they dont take deliveries nor sell any teslas but you can test drive and place an order from them. I wonder if this tip would work or has anybody had this same scenario and was successful on getting that incentive?
