Stolen AirPods and Play Sound Question

Sadly my AirPods were stolen and have found a new home in sunny California. I’m super bummed but have accepted that the thief was faster than me. I marked them as lost and enabled notifications for them immediately and since then it’s been interesting in a sad/funny way to watch their journey. I didn’t think they would make it across the border and country within 24hrs of going missing but here we are! Question: Does the Play Sound feature only work within a certain distance? Will I forever be able to track them?

AlexChen: The play sound feature isn’t limited by distance. As long as your AirPods are within Bluetooth range of an Apple device that’s connected to the internet, they’ll play the sound

SarahKim: we had a cell phone stolen once, I was able to track it and then repeatedly play a sound, eventually the thief just threw it in a field
