SarahKim: Attempts to cancel out loud and annoying noises like the hum of an air conditioner or something, but still allows you to hear unlike noise cancelling which attempts to block all noise.

I personally never use it, it’s either transparency or noice cancellation.
EpicDrift889: supposed to be it listens to your environment and apply the appropriate noise cancellation level. however, for me it's bad. i'd rather just manually switch between modes than use that. it's not very accurate
JordanReed: It’s pretty much all I use. NC gives me headaches most of the time, but adaptive filters out enough of the annoying sounds.
