[Feature Request] Offline Mode should be a Quick Access toggle; it’s the one missing piece for true on-the-go use
By NeonPhoenix3047 · DISCUSSION · About Steam Deck OLED
The Steam Deck is marketed as a portable gaming device. You can take it on a plane, a train, a road trip, or a camping trip. The hardware absolutely delivers on that promise.
But the software has a glaring friction point that nobody talks about enough: getting into offline mode requires way too many steps.
Right now, the path is:
Steam button → Steam menu → Go Offline → Confirm → Steam restarts
That’s a multi-step process with a restart to prepare your device for travel. For something you should be doing every single time you leave the house without reliable Wi-Fi, this is surprisingly clunky for an OS that gets so much else right.
The fix is simple: add an Offline Mode toggle to the Quick Access menu (⋯ button).
The QAM already handles on-the-fly system controls for brightness, volume, fan speed, battery, and performance profiles. These are all things you adjust on the fly, based on where you are and what you’re doing. Offline mode fits that pattern perfectly. It’s a situational toggle that should be one tap away.
This isn’t a hardware ask. It’s not a major OS overhaul. It’s a single toggle in a menu that already exists for exactly this kind of control.
Valve has done incredible work making SteamOS feel like a real portable OS. This one change would close the gap between “portable gaming device” and “device that’s actually designed for mobile use from the ground up.”
Would love to see this in a future SteamOS update. Who else has felt this pain?
TL;DR: Switching to offline mode takes too many steps for something you do every time you leave home. A Quick Access toggle would make the Steam Deck genuinely travel-ready at the OS level.

SwiftMaker840: Quick Access button -> airplane mode
AlexChen: I use my device consistently in a few places that don't have wifi - and I dont think I've ever sought out offline mode?
What are you using it for?
EpicDrift889: Air plane mod or turn off wifi, both take seconds to get too from the quickmenu
SwiftEcho377: Switching too offline mode is totally unnecessary for gaming on the go.
I play away from WiFi all the time, I’ve never once used offline mode. I think you can use it as a precaution but it’s not necessary, you could just use airplane mode as easily.
NeonFlux225: I use it when travelling all the time, including on planes, and never use offline mode
